Redact a PDF
Black out sensitive areas of a PDF. Redacted pages are rebuilt as images, so the covered text is removed from the file. It runs in your browser, so your file is not uploaded.
Processed in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.
How it works
- Add one PDF file.
- Draw black boxes over what you want to remove, and choose the pages to redact.
- Select Redact selected pages, then look at every redacted page in the preview.
- Tick the confirmation and download the redacted PDF.
Questions about this tool
Is my PDF uploaded when I redact it?
No. Redact PDF runs in your browser, on your own device. Your PDF is read and changed there, and never sent to our servers or to anyone else's.
What happens to my data?
Your PDF, the boxes you draw and the redacted copy stay in your browser's memory while you work and are gone when you close or refresh the page. We do not save them, and this site uses no analytics or advertising cookies. Our host may keep ordinary server logs of page visits, which never include your files.
Is there a file size limit?
We do not set one. The work is done in your device's memory, so very large files can be slow or fail, especially on a phone. Every redacted page is drawn as an image, which takes more memory at the higher DPI settings. The page warns you above 50 MB for one file or 200 MB in total, and you can still carry on.
What can't Redact PDF do?
Redacted pages become images, so their text can no longer be searched or selected. Comments, form fields and internal links in the file may be removed, and the tool tells you how many. Look at every redacted page before you download. Password-protected PDFs have to be unlocked first.
