Make a PDF smaller
Recompress the pictures in a PDF at a quality you choose, or rebuild its pages as images, and download the result only if it is smaller. It runs in your browser, so your file is not uploaded.
Processed in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.
How it works
- Add one PDF file.
- Choose Smaller to recompress its pictures, or Smallest to rebuild its pages as images.
- Pick the picture quality and select the button.
- Compare the before and after sizes, and download the new file if it is smaller.
What this does and doesn't do
- What it does
- Smaller saves the JPEG pictures in your PDF again at the quality you choose and can scale down very large ones, leaving text, links and form fields untouched. Smallest draws every page to an image and builds a new PDF from those. You see the real before and after sizes.
- What it doesn't do
- No saving is promised: a PDF that is mostly text will barely change, and a file that does not get smaller is not offered for download. Smallest makes text impossible to search or select and drops links and form fields. Pictures that are not plain JPEG are left alone in Smaller mode.
Questions about this tool
Is my PDF uploaded when I compress it?
No. Compress PDF runs in your browser, on your own device. Your PDF is read and changed there, and never sent to our servers or to anyone else's.
What happens to my data?
Your PDF and the smaller copy stay in your browser's memory while you work and are gone when you close or refresh the page. We do not save them, and this site uses no analytics or advertising cookies. Our host may keep ordinary server logs of page visits, which never include your files.
Is there a file size limit?
We do not set one. The work is done in your device's memory, so very large files can be slow or fail, especially on a phone. The Smallest option redraws every page, so it takes the longest on long PDFs. The page warns you above 50 MB for one file or 200 MB in total, and you can still carry on.
Does it change my original file?
No. You download a new file, and the original on your device is left exactly as it was.
