Compress images

Loading tool…

Make JPG, PNG and WebP pictures smaller for email, forms and websites. Pick a quality or a target size, shrink big photos to a size you choose, and see the real before and after sizes. It runs in your browser, so your images are not uploaded.

Processed in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

How it works

  1. Add one or more JPG, PNG or WebP images.
  2. Choose the quality, a largest size or a target file size if you want one, and the format to save as.
  3. Select Make images smaller and compare the before and after sizes.
  4. Download each picture that got smaller, or all of them as a ZIP.

What this does and doesn't do

What it does
Saves each image again at the quality you choose, or finds the best quality that stays under a target size, and can shrink it to fit a largest width and height. It turns photos upright using their camera rotation flag, and removes camera details such as the location unless you choose to keep them (JPG saved as JPG only). It only offers a download when the new file is smaller.
What it doesn't do
PNG pictures are saved without loss, so quality does not apply to them: set a largest size or save as WebP or JPG to make them smaller. Saving as JPG fills transparent areas with white. Colour profiles are not kept. GIF, HEIC, AVIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG files and animated images are not supported, and pictures above 64 megapixels are refused. Your original files are never changed.

Questions about this tool

Are my images uploaded when I compress them?

No. Compress Image runs in your browser, on your own device. Your images are read and changed there, and never sent to our servers or to anyone else's.

What happens to my data?

Your images and the smaller copies stay in your browser's memory while you work and are gone when you close or refresh the page. We do not save them, and this site uses no analytics or advertising cookies. Our host may keep ordinary server logs of page visits, which never include your files.

Is there a file size limit?

We do not set one. The work is done in your device's memory, so very large files can be slow or fail, especially on a phone. Each picture is opened at full size in memory (a 12-megapixel photo takes about 48 MB), and pictures above 64 megapixels are refused. The page warns you above 50 MB for one file or 200 MB in total, and you can still carry on.

Does it change my original file?

No. You download a new file, and the original on your device is left exactly as it was.
